How to Manage Adrenaline and Speak With Confidence
Sarah was next to present at my day-long training session. Nervous but excited, she stepped onto the podium and began speaking—words flying like machine gun fire. Within thirty seconds, she was gasping for breath, and the audience struggled to keep up.
I stopped her mid-sentence.
“Sarah,” I said, “stand in silence for a moment. Observe your emotions. Ground yourself by feeling the floor beneath your feet. Inhale… exhale… bring your breath into your belly. Good. Now, find one person in the audience and look them in the eye. When you feel a genuine connection—eyeball to eyeball, heart to heart—then begin to speak. Connect first. Speak second.”
Sarah followed the advice. Her hyperventilation stopped, her pace slowed, and she began engaging—not talking at—her audience.
Adrenaline Can Push You Into Hyper-Drive
Stepping onto a stage triggers a surge of adrenaline. Your heart races, breathing quickens, and words often come too fast. It’s natural—your body is in fight-or-flight mode. But if you start speaking immediately, you skip a crucial step: connecting first.
Think of it like throwing a ball. You wouldn’t toss it without making sure someone is ready to catch it. The same goes for speaking. Establish a connection first, then deliver your words.
Rule of thumb:
Connect first. Speak second.
Practice Connection Daily
You don’t need a stage to practice this principle. Every conversation is an opportunity. Before you speak:
- Take a deep breath.
- Make eye contact.
- Pause briefly to establish a non-verbal connection.
Even in small meetings or casual interactions, this pause improves focus, presence, and engagement. Many great teachers and speakers command attention with silence and eye contact before saying a word—proving the power of connecting first.
Why This Matters
Rushing into speech without grounding yourself can result in lost messages, confused audiences, and unnecessary stress. Pausing to connect helps you:
- Slow down your pace.
- Focus on meaningful communication.
- Reduce anxiety and manage adrenaline.
- Engage your audience more effectively.
