Imagine Your Last Lecture

Ron had built, bought, and sold multiple successful businesses. Now, in the middle of his life and career, he felt a persistent pull to do something new: create a signature keynote presentation that captured the lessons he’d learned along the way.

For nearly a year, he wrestled with it. Ideas came and went. Themes felt too broad, too vague, or too forgettable. Finally, frustrated and stuck, Ron reached out to me.

“I can’t pin down a topic,” he admitted during our first conversation. “I know I have something to say—but I don’t know what it is.”

I asked him a simple question:

“If you could only speak publicly one more time in your life, who would you want to speak to—and what would you want them to hear?”

He didn’t hesitate.

“I’d want to speak to visionary business owners who want to change the world,” he said. “And I’d want to inspire them to lead with love, generosity, and humanity.”

Then he smiled.

“That’s it.”

What Is a “Last Lecture?”

In academia, the Last Lecture is a cherished tradition. A retiring professor is invited to deliver one final talk—distilling a lifetime of knowledge, wisdom, and hard-earned truth into a single message.

When Ron imagined his own Last Lecture, everything changed. His audience became clear. His message sharpened. More importantly, he felt free—free to create a deeply personal presentation that moved people to think, feel, and act.

That’s why, when I work with business leaders and speakers—whether they’re crafting a full-length keynote or a seven-minute TED-style talk—I often start with this very question.

Imagining your Last Lecture does something powerful. It stirs the soul. It reminds us of the fleeting nature of time and the extraordinary responsibility that comes with standing in front of an audience and speaking.

What If You Created Your Last Lecture?

Imagine this for a moment.

You can only speak once more. One audience. One opportunity.

Who would be sitting in front of you? What would they most need to hear? What truth, lesson, or story would you feel compelled to share?

Whether you’re delivering a quarterly update, leading your team through uncertainty, or stepping onto a keynote stage, your words matter. Public speaking isn’t just about information—it’s about impact.

Your message has the power to influence hearts, shift perspectives, and inspire action. The audience you’re meant to serve is already waiting.

Use your words intentionally. Use them generously. Use them to help.
