How to Deliver a Eulogy
How to Deliver a Eulogy: Public speaking comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s pitching a new product, giving a keynote that inspires, presenting quarterly results, or making a toast at a wedding. All of these moments can trigger nerves, adrenaline, or a flood of emotions.
But one of the most challenging forms of public speaking is giving a eulogy—speaking in honor of someone who has passed.
Eulogies: One of Life’s Toughest Speeches
Many people hesitate when asked to deliver a eulogy. They worry about what to include—personal stories, memorable quirks, or the positive impact their loved one made on others. They worry about delivery—how to speak from the heart in simple, accessible language.
Above all, they fear being overcome by emotion in front of family and friends. This fear is natural. Feeling vulnerable in public is uncomfortable, yet it’s often what makes a eulogy truly resonate.
Bringing genuine vulnerability to a eulogy allows your audience to connect deeply with you. At a funeral, your openness helps others feel and process their grief alongside you.
A Real-Life Example: Kemper Sosa’s Eulogy for Tyler Baker
Recently, I watched my friend Kemper Sosa deliver a eulogy for his close friend and employee, Tyler Baker, who tragically passed away at 33 from a rare form of cancer. Tyler left behind his wife Claire and their young son, Conor.
Kemper didn’t shy away from the gravity of the moment. He acknowledged the grief in the room and allowed his own tears to flow. But he also honored Tyler’s life with heartfelt stories: sharing their decade-long friendship, parenting anecdotes, and Tyler’s bravery through illness.
Kemper’s vulnerability became his strength. By staying present, sharing from the heart, and embracing the emotion of the moment, he gave a eulogy that moved everyone in the room.
If Kemper had let fear hold him back, the room—and Tyler’s family—would have missed a profound, healing tribute.
Making the Most of the Moments That Matter
Life is full of fleeting moments. Some moments—like delivering a eulogy—carry extraordinary significance. When these moments arrive, will you step up, or let fear hold you back?
Stepping up to speak your truth can leave a lasting impact, create healing, and honor those who matter most. Because, as Tyler’s passing reminds us, life is too short to let meaningful moments slip away.
