Public Speaking Tips for Introverts

Public Speaking Tips for Introverts: When “Alice,” a CFO I once coached, told me why she dreaded giving presentations, she didn’t hesitate.

“It’s because I’m an introvert. I’d much rather talk one-on-one than get up in front of a group. Having all those eyes on me makes me anxious. The whole process—the prepping, the speaking, the emotional drain—completely exhausts me. I’m toast afterwards!”

Alice’s struggle isn’t unique. Many introverted leaders—CFOs, CIOs, and executives—would rather be behind their laptops than behind a podium. Yet their roles require them to speak: delivering financial updates, leading project briefings, or sharing insights at company events.

If that sounds like you, take heart: you can absolutely become an effective and engaging speaker without changing who you are.

I Get It—Because I’m an Introvert Too

Despite being a keynote speaker and presentation coach, I’m an introvert at heart. I love connecting deeply, but I also know the energy toll that speaking can take.

The key isn’t to eliminate anxiety—it’s to manage it with intention before and after you speak. That’s where my favorite framework comes in: R & R & R.

R & R & R: Rituals, Routine, and Repetition

Before any presentation, I rely on what I call Pre-Presentation R & R & R—Rituals, Routine, and Repetition.

As I explain in my book Charismatic Presence: 5 Principles for Magnetic Presentations, these are activities that help your body move from stress to calm. They activate your parasympathetic nervous system so you can focus, stay grounded, and speak with presence.

Here are a few examples of effective pre-presentation rituals:

  • Repeating a positive mantra like “I’m relaxed and ready.”
  • Invoking guidance from a higher power or purpose.
  • Shaking out physical tension (“getting the ya-ya’s out”).
  • Holding or wearing a meaningful object—like a ring or photo.
  • Listening to an energizing song.
  • Practicing mindful breathing.
  • Dedicating your talk to someone special.

These rituals train your body and mind to associate presenting with calm confidence—not panic.

Post-Presentation R & R & R: Reflection, Restoration, and Reward

What happens after you speak matters just as much as what happens before.

Introverts often feel emotionally depleted after presentations. That’s why I developed Post-Presentation R & R & R—Reflection, Restoration, and Reward. This helps you recover, learn, and re-energize.

1. Reflection

After your talk, give yourself time to debrief rationally. Ask yourself these four grounding questions:

  1. Did I fulfill my intention—my purpose in serving the audience?
  2. What went better than I hoped?
  3. What didn’t go so well?
  4. What can I do differently next time?

These keep you from spiraling into negativity and help you focus on growth rather than perfection.

2. Restoration

Next, restore your energy. Find activities that comfort, calm, and refill your emotional reserves:

  • Sit quietly alone before rejoining others.
  • Try a mindfulness meditation app like Calm or Headspace.
  • Use deep breathing (5-7-8 or box breathing).
  • Take a peaceful walk in nature.
  • Embrace silence or take a nap.
  • Watch a feel-good movie or show.

Restoration helps your nervous system recover so that speaking doesn’t feel like a threat—but simply another meaningful experience.

3. Reward

Finally, celebrate your effort. Reward yourself with something that marks the accomplishment:

  • A massage or bubble bath.
  • A new book you’ve been eyeing.
  • Dinner at your favorite restaurant.

Your reward closes the loop, reinforcing the message that your courage was worth it.

In Short: Care Before, Care After

Public speaking doesn’t have to deplete you—it can fulfill you, if you approach it with care.

If you’re an introvert, build your before and after speaking rituals with intention. Prep with grounding routines, and recover with reflection, restoration, and reward.

The result? You’ll feel calmer, more confident, and more willing to share your insights—the very ones your audience needs to hear.
